Stainless Steel Pipe Coupons — 316/316L

Providing quality equipment to create solutions specific to your needs.

ASTM A312 TP316/316L austenitic stainless steel pipe coupons provide superior corrosion resistance compared to Type 304 through the addition of 2-3% molybdenum. This alloying element significantly enhances resistance to chloride-induced pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in marine and chemical environments.

The 316L low-carbon variant limits carbon content to 0.03% maximum, preventing carbide precipitation during welding and maintaining corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone without post-weld solution annealing. This makes 316L the preferred choice for welded fabrications in corrosive service.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

Type 316/316L excels in chloride-containing environments, marine atmospheres, brackish water, pulp and paper bleaching operations, pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical processing involving acidic media, and applications requiring resistance to reducing acids. The molybdenum content provides a critical performance advantage over Type 304 in these demanding services.

Common Applications

Pharmaceutical processing equipment, marine piping systems, chemical processing piping, photographic and food processing equipment, coastal architectural applications, medical devices and implants, and heat exchangers handling corrosive fluids all benefit from 316/316L’s enhanced corrosion properties.

Mechanical Properties

TP316/316L offers minimum tensile strength of 75,000 psi and yield strength of 30,000 psi in the annealed condition. The austenitic structure maintains ductility and toughness across a wide temperature range from cryogenic to elevated temperatures approaching 1500°F, though corrosion resistance may be affected at temperature extremes.

Welding Practices

Welding requires ER316L filler metal to match base material corrosion resistance. GTAW is preferred for root passes with transition to GMAW for productivity on fill and cap passes. Maintain interpass temperature below 350°F. No preheat required. Back purging with argon is critical for exposed root passes to prevent sugaring and oxide formation that compromises corrosion resistance.

Consulting Services

Now offering prefabrication consulting.

Prefabrication is more than a cost savings — done right, it compresses your schedule, improves quality, and reduces field labor. But knowing where to draw the line between shop and field work is where experience matters.

We help contractors across Iowa and the United States develop prefabrication strategies that actually move the needle. From our facility in Walford, we provide scope identification, constructability reviews, material optimization, and logistics planning — offering practical guidance for projects nationally from people who have done the work, not just drawn the plan.
