ASTM A106 Grade B seamless carbon steel pipe coupons represent the industry standard for high-temperature process and power piping applications. This specification covers seamless carbon steel pipe suitable for bending, flanging, and similar forming operations for moderate and elevated temperature service.
A106 Grade B material offers excellent weldability using conventional SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, and FCAW processes without mandatory preheat in most applications. The specified minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi and yield strength of 35,000 psi provide reliable mechanical properties for pressure containment across a wide temperature range from -29°F to 750°F.
This material serves as the workhorse for refineries, chemical plants, power generation facilities, and general industrial piping systems. Common applications include steam distribution, hydrocarbon processing, water service, compressed air systems, and general utility piping where corrosive conditions are not a primary concern.
We maintain inventory in sizes from 1/2″ through 36″ NPS across schedule ranges from SCH 10 through SCH XXS (double extra heavy). Wall thickness selection depends on design pressure, temperature, and code requirements per ASME B31.1, B31.3, or other applicable piping codes.
A106 Grade B welds readily with matching carbon steel filler metals such as E7018 (SMAW) or ER70S-6 (GTAW/GMAW). For thicker wall sections above 3/4″, preheating to 200-400°F may be specified depending on ambient temperature and joint restraint. Post-weld heat treatment is not typically required unless mandated by code or service conditions.
Material traceability and mill test reports are provided with all orders to ensure compliance with project specifications and quality assurance requirements.
